WCCW March Star Wars 1985

Week 4, March 1985

Reunion Arena, Dallas, TX

Davey Boy Smith versus Matt Borne

Davey Boy Smith defeated Matt Borne in 5:43 by pinfall with a Running Powerslam in a decent opening match. The former entered the ring sporting a Union Jack flag on a caped-jacket, drawing comparison to the old entrances of another fellow English-native, Chris Adams. While his in-ring work is a bit different than Adams, Davey Boy continues to draw solid reactions from the Texas faithful, as he made good work of trailer park trash Matt Borne! A big singles win on a big stage for Davey Boy further advances his rank in the World Class territory.

WCCW Television Championship

One Man Gang © versus Iceman King Parsons

In a decent match, One Man Gang © defeated Iceman King Parsons in 7:41 by pinfall with a 747 Splash after Jim Cornette interfered. While good vibes carried over from the opening match to a veteran babyface of the Texas territory, Iceman Parsons, all of his boogie-woogie wasn’t enough to overcome the odds against a big man like OMG, and the dirty tactics of his manager. Cornette played a vital role in this one, perhaps saving his client from ultimate defeat late in the match, giving One Man Gang defence number two of the WCCW Television title.

Brian Adias and Mike Von Erich versus The Fabulous Ones

In a decent match, Brian Adias and Mike Von Erich defeated The Fabulous Ones in 7:23 when Mike Von Erich pinned Steve Keirn with a flying crossbody. While the heels from Memphis haven’t quite found the success they were looking for when taking a shot down in Dallas, the impromptu duo of Brian and Mike continues to grow in favor, earning another respected victory at tonight’s Star Wars. The combination of Brian’s solid ground game with Mike’s fast-moving attacks (shades of his brother, Kevin) have served them well, with Mike consistently playing the hero on the hot tags. His flying crossbodies are becoming some of the best in the business, and this time it’s too much for Keirn and his partner to overcome!

Jerry Blackwell versus Rick Rude

In a decent match, Jerry Blackwell defeated Rick Rude in 9:25 by pinfall after a dropkick. The 474 lbs. meatball of a man’s popularity continues to skyrocket in the Mid-South area, having nearly doubled since debuting in Texas. Blackwell’s attitude and slight Southern-drawl appeals to the blue collar workers in the Dallas-Ft. Worth region, with a rough-and-tough persona about him, having shown no fear since stepping into a World Class ring. On the other side, Rick Rude appeals to almost nobody in the Reunion Arena crowd, and they let him know it. In fact, Rude continues to embody everything the local fans hate about some people in society… arrogant, narcissistic, vain… Rick Rude is all of that and more. And with Rude’s physique, he is able to stand up to the nearly immovable forces of Jerry Blackwell, giving him a real run for his money but unfortunately unable to cheat his way to a victory in the end. Blackwell would reverse a dirty attack by Rude, able to avoid disaster and nail Rude with a monsterous dropkick as he came back off the ropes!

The Fantastics versus The Long Riders

In a good match, The Long Riders defeated The Fantastics in 13:32 when Scott Irwin submitted Tommy Rogers after blatantly cheating. The territory’s favorite tag team, a combination of Bobby Fulton and partner Rogers, who recently lost the NWA American Tag Team titles. This time, a new challenge, yet old for many in the crowd. Returning from their stint as the NWA National Tag Team champions, The Long Riders returned to Reunion Arena for the first time in half a year. Finding themselves on a similar quest of tag team title gold as their opponents tonight, the rough and tough duo of the Irwin brothers showed the Fantastic-faithful just why they are so feared across all of the nation. The Fantastics, however, wouldn’t go down easy, but Irwin’s well-timed shot to the family jewels of Tommy Rogers was all they needed to earn the victory and perhaps set the Fantastics back yet another step! The Fantastics were visibly displeased after the match, petitioning to the officials, but it was to no avail.

Billy Jack Haynes versus Randy Savage

In a good match that got the crowd hotter, Randy Savage defeated Billy Jack Haynes in 15:38 when Billy Jack Haynes submitted Randy Savage in a Full Nelson Lock… only for referee Rick Hazard to recover from being knocked unconscious temporarily and demand a reversal of the decision! The crowd was hot from the get-go for this match, one between two of the hottest rising stars in World Class wrestling. The two put on a solid performance, highlighted by Randy showcasing some of his technical prowess in attempts to one-up Billy Jack in the ring. However, Haynes was able to rely on much of his powerhouse physique to physically punish the smaller Savage when he was able to get his hands firmly on him. While some of the crowd seemed to support Randy, the overwhelming majority favored the talents of one Billy Jack, who played up to the crowd’s demeanor. Savage, on the other hand, relished in the negativity he received from all four sides of the ring. For Savage, as well, another cheap victory over Billy Jack, a man he is confident he is better than, any day of the week. Albeit, Savage has yet to prove it in true fashion. Instead, he relies this time on the referee convincing his fellow officials that Billy Jack should be disqualified. With the action having ceased, Haynes is watching over the proceedings, and begins to interject in protest! The officials aren’t having it, and after Billy Jack puts his hands on Rick Hazard, he immediately calls for the bells and disqualifies Haynes! The Dallas crowd can’t believe it! Savage is declared the winner and leaves Reunion Arena with another big, undeserved, smile on his face.

NWA American Tag Team Championship

The Midnight Express © versus Rock N’ Roll Express

In a good match that got the crowd hotter, The Midnight Express © defeated the Rock N' Roll Express in 17:17 when Bobby Eaton pinned Robert Gibson with The Rocket Launcher following interference from Bill and Scott Irwin, the Long Riders! Not only would the Long Riders spoil the hopes of the Dallas audience in their earlier match against the former tag champs, but now they are interfering in the results of the actual tag team title match as well! After all was said and done, Jim Cornette looked a bit shocked by what had happened, as though he had no idea the Long Riders would even attempt something of the sort. But it wasn’t all fun and games for Cornette, who would end up in the ring across from the Long Riders, who proceeded to threaten the tag champs as well! The fans egged on the Irwin brothers to get into some action with the Midnights, but Cornette convinced his men to stand down and take on this fight another day. Needless to say, the Long Riders were left standing as though they were soon enough on top of the tag team division in a very short amount of time. The Midnight Express make defence number one of the NWA American Tag Team titles.

Chris Adams versus Hercules Hernandez

In a good match, Chris Adams defeated Hercules Hernandez in 14:01 by pinfall with a Superkick following botched interference by Gary Hart! That’s right! The so-called, “Manager of Champions” tried to get his hands on Adams during his new client’s big time match against his former client. Revenge was on the mind of Hart, who was trash-talking Adams the entire time they were out with each other inside and around the ring! The fans seemed 100% on-board with Chris Adams in this one, showing signs of when Adams were first a babyface when he joined World Class, before turning on the Von Erichs and joining forces with his current tag team partner. Perhaps that’s just how despised Gary Hart is amongst the World Class faithful, willing to throw their support behind another one of Texas’ most hated heels.

For Chris Adams, he was willing to throw all of his might into his offense against Hercules, who vastly other powered him. Adams moved as quick as he could to stay a step ahead of Hercules, but for those who had seen Hernandez in action, he is quick too, despite his size. There was no shortage of punishment dished out to Adams, as Hercules was out to prove himself to his new manager. No better opportunity to do so than against his former client. Hart shouted instructions from ringside, coaching Hernandez through various sequences, most of which resulting in Hercules maintaining the upper-hand.

But simply coaching wouldn’t be enough for Hart. He had to get blood on his hands, and it had to be Chris Adams’ blood. So, in coordinated efforts with his new client, Hart ascended to the apron and attempted to attack “The Gentleman” with Japanese kendo stick, but instead Adams ducked his swing and the stick landed on the head of Hercules! Hernandez took to the mat, downed and out, and would attempt to recover with one final go at it, only to walk straight into a big Superkick from Adams to secure the victory! Once the official called it, Hart threw a tantrum on the outside, while Adams forced Hercules out of the ring and taunted both from the inside. For Adams, sweet reinforcement that he had perhaps made the right choice finally leaving his long-time manager, and for Gary Hart, perhaps a giant disruption to his master plan of one day managing a world champion...

Just when we thought it was over, out runs the returning Kevin Von Erich! He’s running full-steam ahead towards the outside and pummels Hercules Hernandez with a bunch of unexpected blows to the head! Kevin’s moving as if his shorts are on fire, beating up Hercules so bad he sends him flying to the floor! Gary Hart can’t believe it, and pleads for Kevin not to attack him, but as Kevin slowly approaches Hart with his fist cocked-n-loaded, Chris Adams grabs his attention from inside the ring!

Adams eggs Kevin on, challenging him to get in the ring and “get what was coming to him”. Kevin didn’t think twice about it, overcoming a series of stomps as soon as he slid in, but soon over powering Chris with an overwhelming desire for revenge since Chris and Hercules injured his ankle last month on Championship Sports! The fans light up as Kevin counters Adams with a series of fists, and proceeds to throw him off the ropes right into a huge flying crossbody! But Kevin isn’t done there! Adams stumbles into a corner, and here comes Kevin, flying from almost across the ring with another crossbody attack in the corner! Adams falls towards the middle of the ring, and “The Cosmic Cowboy” jumps on the top rope, raising his arms to the fans excitement! And there he goes! Kevin leaps into the air to deliver a monstrous flying slam to set the crowd on fire!

There’s no question about it now, Kevin’s ankle is healed and he looks as good as ever! Just as Kevin is ready to deliver even more punishment to Adams, officials hit the ring and break up the fight, as Hart and Hercules slowly make their way to the back, perhaps, planning their next move...

Lumberjack Ultimatum Match

David and Kerry Von Erich versus Gino Hernandez and Jake Roberts

In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, David and Kerry Von Erich defeated Gino Hernandez and Jake Roberts in 21:48 when David Von Erich submitted Gino Hernandez with the Iron Claw! With the ultimatum of a lifetime at stake, all four men gave it their all in this one. Gino, fighting off another Texas title shot for David, and Jake, trying to ensure he doesn’t have to put his coveted secret briefcase on the line in a singles match against Kerry. For the Von Erichs, however, it felt like this match was worth even more than what was on-the-line for them, including Kerry committing to never wrestling in another World Class match again if he were to walk away a loser.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts was determined to make this happen, working Kerry the majority of the match and able to outsmart the young vet at various points in time, giving the World Class faithful more than enough anxiety. On the outside, the rest of the World Class roster didn’t hold back on their lumberjack responsibilities, beating down both Kerry and Jake when either were sent tumbling to the outside. On the opposite end, David looked poised and in control when fighting Gino, who seemed like he wanted nothing to do with facing off against David, especially after a narrow call last month. But for David, knowing he may never be able to challenge for his most prized wrestling belt ever again, he pulled a little something extra out to ensure victory. Gino found himself sacrificed to the wolves on the outside multiple times, helping David’s case, many of the babyfaces eager to get their hands on the Texas title belt holder.

The lumberjacks on the outside were able to keep things in order, that is, however, until things got a little dicey in the finish involving David, Gino, and referee David Manning. The head official for this one was knocked out unceremoniously, giving Gino enough time to do what he could to mount some sort of opposition to the inevitable application of the world famous Iron Claw! But when secondary official Rick Hazard jumped in to replace Manning, this spoiled Gino’s plans of dirtying his way through the end. Instead, “The Yellow Rose of Texas”, David Von Erich, was able to clinch on the claw and secure the win for him and his brother! As the bell rang, Jake looked distraught while the entire audience clammered for their heroes! It was a close call for the homegrown superstars, but even against one of their toughest challenges yet, they were able to overcome the forces of greed and evil to secure the win and another chance soon at redemption!

As the fans celebrates, the Von Erichs embrace in the ring and the heels are furious! Gino Hernandez is recovering to the side, while Jake Roberts jumps to the outside and immediately grabs his briefcase! He’s yelling at the fans along the way, yelling at the officials… yelling at anyone and anything! He makes his way through the clutter of other roster members, who are all discussing amongst themselves what just happened, some trying to move out of Jake’s way, others perhaps not so concerned. Clutching the briefcase, Jake is now trying to make his way out of the scene, while the Texas fans close to him are letting him have it! But then, all of the sudden…

Hercules Hernandez jumps on camera with a mighty double axe handle to the back of Jake Roberts’ head! He drops the briefcase and Hercules proceeds to hurl rights and lefts to the head and back of Roberts! Those around them don’t knw what to do! Do they break up this fight! Or let things take its course? That’s right when Chris Adams gets involved and tries to breakaway Hercules from Jake… but he’s unsuccessful when Jerry Blackwell pummels Adams from behind and they start going at it! The fans notice things are getting out of hand now, especially when The Midnight Express run from across the other side and jump The Fantastics!

It really gets out of hand when Kerry Von Erich exits the ring to help save the Fantastics, but he’s stopped by One Man Gang! Kerry takes a few blows from the WCCW Television champion, but a new face appears to save Kerry from the cheapshots, Davey Boy Smith! Followed behind by his partner Owen Hart, Davey Boy makes sure OMG can’t get anymore shots on Kerry, and gets the TV champ isolated and beaten down until he runs away! The fans keep cheering as the situation continues to unwind and get out of control! The timekeeper starts ringing the bell as EVERYBODY is now fighting! Twenty-plus men are attacking one another all around the ring, the camera has a hard time keeping up with the action!

Shots of Randy Savage and Billy Jack Haynes brawling once more are caught candidly, while the camera man tries to get some highlights of Kevin Von Erich now attacking Chris Adams! The latter’s partner, Gino Hernandez, is trying to stay out of things, while other heels attack David Von Erich who's trying to make his way over to the Texas champ. But perhaps most importantly, Jake Roberts and Hercules Hernandez are still battling it out, and we see the briefcase is getting flung around the outside. All of the sudden, midcarder Kelly Kiniski picks up the briefcase and appears to make an attempt to escape with it! He’s quickly knocked down by Mike Von Erich, who forces him to drop the briefcase, while Brian Adias is close by to pick it up! Adias seems to understand what’s happening in the moment, and also tries to escape but he’s cut off by Gino Hernandez, who kicks him in the gut and clobbers him over the top, forcing the briefcase to the ground! Now, Gino picks it up! The fans are losing their minds as Gino is now holding the briefcase close to his chest and tries to flee the scene! And just when Gino thinks he’s free and clear, from across the aisleway, Hercules Hernandez comes from out of nowhere once more and shoulder tackles him with serious force!

The briefcase goes flying in the air, and there’s Gary Hart! He grabs the briefcase and picks it up, then looks at his client Hercules and urges him to escape with him! Hercules stands over Gino before acknowledging his manager and the two run through the curtains and to the back! A few moments later, Jake Roberts is on the scene and runs through the curtains, chasing down Gary Hart with his two-hundred fifty thousand dollar briefcase! Bill Mercer continues going wild on commentary, and can’t believe what he’s just seen! Jake’s lost his briefcase, and Gary Hart now controls its destiny!
